Original TMNT Movie to be Released in Germany ... With Bonus Features!

TMNT fans have been crying out for a better DVD release of the original TMNT movie ever since it first appeared on DVD in 1997. Although it and its sequels have been rereleased several times over the last 13 years, the content on the disc has always been the same, and simple requests like including deleted scenes and director commentary have fallen on deaf ears.

For German fans (and region-savvy fans elsewhere) that is now changing!! TMNT fan hudemx at The Technodrome forums has brought to attention the upcoming German DVD release of the 1990 film.

If you visit the website for the DVD distributor, you can find the list of included bonus features, which are:
  • Trailer
  • Deleted scenes
  • Alternate ending
  • Audio commentary from Director Steve Barron
If you've been reading this site for awhile, you may recall posts that detailed the alternate ending as well as one of the deleted scenes.

So, obviously, this is great news!! Although the bad news is that this seems to be restricted to Germans (for now?). While that may seem like a catch-22 for American fans and other non-Europeans, there are work-arounds to bypass region-locking and PAL coding if you look hard enough.

This DVD will be released on March 12, 2010. If you're ready to order, you can go ahead and do so over at Amazon.de.

TMNT Classic Cartoon Season 7 DVDs Now Available for Pre-Order

Promotional material for the May 12th release of Season 7 of the original TMNT cartoon on DVD has been made available including box art, trailer (commercial), and fact sheet.

Here's a snippet from the fact sheet:

COWABUNGA! It’s been 25 years since Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael, and Donatello, emerged from the sewers of Manhattan and were transformed into heroes-in-a-half-shell battling petty criminals, evil megalomaniacs, and alien invaders. To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles®, Lionsgate Home Entertainment is presenting all 27 episodes of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 7, available for the first-time ever on DVD. Fans can collect the commemorative set that will be sold as four separate DVDs, each featuring different episodes from Season 7 and a Mini-Classic Turtles Action Figure! All four DVDs feature a different turtle on the cover, and fit together to create one power-packed scene with all of the wise-cracking, pizza-obsessed superheroes aligned and ready for battling evil. The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Season 7 DVDs will be available on May 12th, for the suggested retail price of $14.98 each.

And here's the trailer/commercial:

DVD Update ... Or Not

The above DVD covers caused quite a stir when they appeared on Amazon.com out of the blue yesterday. Not just with fans, but at Mirage itself where they first learned of these new DVD covers at the same time.

What does this mean? Are these DVDs with brand new content? Or just repackaging of the old content? Unfortunately, it's just repackaging of the old content.

Does this mean that there's no chance of a Special Edition and/or Blu-Ray release of one or all of the movies? NO. I can report that there is still hope in both regards, although it is also far from being a certain thing. Hopefully I can provide a more specific update within the next couple of months.

Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation on DVD - A Recap

There remains to be a bit of confusion about The Next Mutation's availability, so here's the complete run down.

The complete series is now available on DVD in the UK. As such, while the box says Ninja Turtles, the theme song and titles on the episodes say Hero Turtles. It also seems to be the case that some episodes have been edited, but this is pretty much your only option unless some miracle sees these released in the US some day.

Here are the two box sets you need to get all 26 episodes:

The set on the left, Volume 1, is a repackaging of three discs that were previously released. Those three discs are East Meets West (episodes 1-5), Staff of Bu-Ki (episodes 6-8), and All in the Family (episodes 9-11). This is important information, because based on the Amazon.co.uk listing, this set is now out of print. If you can't find the set, perhaps you can find the individual discs.

The set on the right, Volume 2, just got released this month after being delayed from its original 2007 scheduled release. This set is a true box set that features episodes 12-26. You can currently find this set on Amazon.co.uk, but I would recommend purchasing sooner rather than later, as all of these have been going out of print very fast.

If all else fails, there's always eBay, but you'll need to look at eBay.co.uk. At the moment, seller drstevew has both DVD sets available (Volume 1, Volume 2).

Of course, to watch any of these you'll need to be able to play Region 2, PAL-encoded DVDs. To do this you can buy an expensive region-free DVD player or there are ... other ways. A little time spent with the Google should help you find information that will allow you to view these discs without spending any additional money.

Good luck!

Lost Season on DVD May 20th?

The Terror of Death has found this link, which indicates that we may be able to expect to see the "Lost Season" of the 4Kids TMNT series on DVD on May 20th. This date seems extremely tentative for now, though.

The "Lost Season" begins airing on 4KidsTV on February 9th.

Season 6 DVD of Original TMNT Cartoon Announced

TVShowsOnDVD.com is reporting the release of Season 6 of the original TMNT cartoon series on DVD this April. Unfortunately for the TMNT completest, there continue to be some overlooked episodes that don't seem to be planned for this upcoming release.

With only 16 episodes planned for this release, that means that once again, "Once Upon A Time Machine" and "Planet of the Turtleoids" will not be included. This is especially bad as season 6 contains a follow-up episode to "Planet of the Turtleoids."

TMNT fans are highly encouraged to contact Lionsgate and let them know that you want the complete TMNT series on DVD and that it is essential that these episodes not be overlooked. It would also be a good idea to ask for all of the Turtle Tips shorts that originally aired on CBS between episodes.

Here is the contact information for Lionsgate:
email: general-inquiries@lionsgate.com
Home Video PR Contact: Katie Walsh - 212.386.6894

If anyone calls the phone number, please let us know your results!

You can read more about this at The Technodrome.

Thanks to gobo for keeping on top of the situation.

Complete Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation Series on DVD

While Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation has yet to see any sort of DVD release in the United States, there has been a series of releases in the UK. However, most of these releases merely regurgitated the first 5 episodes again and again, with occasional releases of episodes 6-11 and no releases of the second half of the series.

That is about to change and you will soon be able to own the entire Next Mutation series on DVD.

The first 11 episodes are currently available in the UK on the DVD 3-pack pictured above, titled "Turtles Night Out." A second release, with episodes 12-26, is due to be released on November 12.

Both DVDs are available to order from Amazon.co.uk, but buyers should keep in mind that these are Region 2, PAL-formated DVDs. North American DVD players and TVs are built to play Region 1 and NTSC DVDs. An innovative person can find a way around this limitation.

Thanks to Gobo for keeping tabs on these DVDs.

TMNT on DVD This Tuesday

TMNT comes to DVD this Tuesday, August 7. Here's a rundown of special deals at some major retailers.

Target

  • Exclusive 2-disc Deluxe Edition DVD for $22.99.
  • Regular Edition DVD for $16.99.
Circuit City

  • DVD for $16.99 + free action figure (the free action figure looks to be one of the mini figures that were available at Toys R Us earlier this year).
WalMart
  • I thought I had read WalMart would have the movie packaged with the PC game for $19.99, but now I can't find confirmation on this.
BestBuy
  • DVD for $16.99, no special bonus.
Based on this information, it would seem that Target is the place to go for the "Deluxe Edition."

Don't forget that Season 5 of the original cartoon and Volume 2 of Fast Forward are also available on the same day. There are reports that some stores have already put these on the shelf, so you might get lucky and find them early if you look.
