Beginning January 12, cable network The Hub will be airing episodes of Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation.

From the press release:

“Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation” (1:30-2 p.m.) Hub TV Network Series Premiere
Everyone’s favorite turtles are coming to The Hub! Leonardo, Raphael, Donatello and Michelangelo are four genetically mutated turtles who have grown into human-sized, ninja-powered crime-fighters living in the sewers of New York City. Under the tutelage of Master Splinter, these four teens have spent their formative years fighting their nemesis, Shredder, and his evil army. But now, they are introduced to a new foe, Dragon Lord. It will take all the power of the turtles to combat the new villain, but lucky for them, they will have help from a new ninja turtle, a female turtle named Venus De Milo.

With 26 episodes total in the series, this collection should have 13 episodes across 2 discs. And with any luck, Vol. 2 won't be too far behind it.

This set is available for pre-order right now!

Shout! Factory Acquires DVD Rights for "Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation"

Last year, Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation appeared on Netflix streaming as part of a distribution acquisition that included most all of the titles in Saban's library. This was the first time The Next Mutation had appeared in the United States in any format in well over 10 years.

Now, in a DVD distribution deal that consists mostly of Power Rangers episodes, Shout! Factory has picked up the rights for The Next Mutation. This doesn't guarantee that the series will be released on DVD, but it is an important step in making it happen. Here's hoping!

"Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation" Now Streaming on Netflix

Well, here's something I didn't see coming. The infamous 1997-98 live action TMNT TV series, which has never seen a proper video release in the United States, is now available on Netflix's streaming service. Saban recently reacquired the rights to its TV shows that had previously been owned by Disney, The Next Mutation being among those shows. And it looks like they don't intend to sit on it. Could a DVD release be in the future?

Despite an over-abundance of odd sound effects, The Next Mutation is a part of TMNT history that's still worth checking out, especially if you've never seen it before.

Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation on DVD - A Recap

There remains to be a bit of confusion about The Next Mutation's availability, so here's the complete run down.

The complete series is now available on DVD in the UK. As such, while the box says Ninja Turtles, the theme song and titles on the episodes say Hero Turtles. It also seems to be the case that some episodes have been edited, but this is pretty much your only option unless some miracle sees these released in the US some day.

Here are the two box sets you need to get all 26 episodes:

The set on the left, Volume 1, is a repackaging of three discs that were previously released. Those three discs are East Meets West (episodes 1-5), Staff of Bu-Ki (episodes 6-8), and All in the Family (episodes 9-11). This is important information, because based on the listing, this set is now out of print. If you can't find the set, perhaps you can find the individual discs.

The set on the right, Volume 2, just got released this month after being delayed from its original 2007 scheduled release. This set is a true box set that features episodes 12-26. You can currently find this set on, but I would recommend purchasing sooner rather than later, as all of these have been going out of print very fast.

If all else fails, there's always eBay, but you'll need to look at At the moment, seller drstevew has both DVD sets available (Volume 1, Volume 2).

Of course, to watch any of these you'll need to be able to play Region 2, PAL-encoded DVDs. To do this you can buy an expensive region-free DVD player or there are ... other ways. A little time spent with the Google should help you find information that will allow you to view these discs without spending any additional money.

Good luck!

TMNT Flashback: A Belated Happy Thanksgiving

I didn't post anything on Thanksgiving because I couldn't think of any TMNT Thanksgiving-related items/images. Then tonight I was browsing through my Next Mutation coloring books and I found this.

So there ya go: Happy Thanksgiving!

TMNT Flashback: Let's Talk Turtle!

Back in 1997-98, when Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation was airing for its single season, Fox produced a quarterly "Totally Fox Kids Magazine" that featured articles and activities about the different shows they were airing. This scan is of a 2-page spread in the Autumn 1997 issue, which coincided with the premiere of the series.

Complete Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation Series on DVD

While Ninja Turtles: The Next Mutation has yet to see any sort of DVD release in the United States, there has been a series of releases in the UK. However, most of these releases merely regurgitated the first 5 episodes again and again, with occasional releases of episodes 6-11 and no releases of the second half of the series.

That is about to change and you will soon be able to own the entire Next Mutation series on DVD.

The first 11 episodes are currently available in the UK on the DVD 3-pack pictured above, titled "Turtles Night Out." A second release, with episodes 12-26, is due to be released on November 12.

Both DVDs are available to order from, but buyers should keep in mind that these are Region 2, PAL-formated DVDs. North American DVD players and TVs are built to play Region 1 and NTSC DVDs. An innovative person can find a way around this limitation.
